Many new designers are using full text designs such as blogs, with a full absence of images. This method is not such a new idea, if we all take a look back about 10 years ago we will see similar sites that have no images and only text. Granted the newer work is more esthetically pleasing then the 1997 design, but why? The way the site is laid out and feels is more inviting; because designers found that using colors and other fonts help the user interface. The design made in 97 most likely was all “Times” and was done with using hardly any style. The design done today uses soft colors and a few fonts, with plenty of white space for the eye to relax.
When designing a site I often come to the navigation first, it’s important to know how the user will get from page to page. Navigation changes your design, so it’s great to know upfront. The type of navigation I would like to talk about is text navigation, not just using actual text I am talking about using a sentence or paragraph.
Lets start with navigation for a site; this site is one I have done before called OboeInk. I used text as the navigation along with a traditional navigation menu.
Here is the navigation:
This is a traditional navigation menu in a list format with a little CSS help.
Lessons | About | Resume
Why not use something like I have done like this:
This is a much more user-friendly idea I think, by offering the links in the text and using it as your navigation. By making links in your text as a nav this will make a call to action for the user to click on what they want; a lesion, learn about, who I is.
